Course Description
The course ‘European International Relations’ focuses on the international relations conducted by the European Union, the primary representative of Europe today. While no one can ignore the EU’s presence in contemporary international relations, the EU’s nature as an international entity remains a unique phenomenon. Like many other international actors, the EU possesses significant resources that qualify it as a global power. The EU, however, is not a state. It is an entity composed of sovereign states, making it impossible for it to behave like other ‘normal’ states. This course will examine the EU’s uniqueness in international relations through a selection of policy sectors or issues in which the EU plays a significant role.
Expected Learning Outcome
- Understand and distinguish the unique characteristics of the European Union as an actor in international relations.
- Explain the position and strengths of the European Union in international relations.
- Critically analyze the global role of the European Union in important global issues such as security and peace, the environment, development, the economy, and human rights.
