Dr. Ririn Tri Nurhayati

Introduction from our Head of Department

Welcome to the Department of International Relations (DIHI), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada — the first institution to offer education in the field of international relations in Indonesia, established on July 10, 1957. Nearly seven decades on, this journey reflects our enduring commitment to cultivating thinkers and practitioners equipped to navigate the shifting dynamics of international affairs, while remaining attentive to the nation’s challenges and to humanitarian concerns.

Currently, DIHI offers two study programs, which are undergraduate and master’s programs, as well as a research center called the Institute of International Studies (IIS). Our undergraduate education (S1) is offered through two tracks: the regular class and the International Undergraduate Program (IUP). We offer a double degree program for IUP in IR students. For students seeking to accelerate their studies, we also offer a Fast-Track pathway that allows students to complete both undergraduate and master’s degrees in 4.5 years — or 5 years with the double-degree option.

Beyond the undergraduate level, our Master’s Program in International Relations (MIHI) — first established in 2002 and independently managed by DIHI since 2010 — currently offers two concentrations under the 2024 Curriculum: International Relations (MAIR) and Digital Transformation and Competitiveness (DTC). Our graduates, from both the undergraduate and graduate levels, have gone on to build distinguished careers in government agencies, international organizations, the private sector, the media, and non-governmental organizations.

Across both the undergraduate and graduate levels, our academic strengths span global politics and security, diplomacy and foreign policy, international political economy, and peace and conflict resolution — all pursued through a Global South perspective in addressing the challenges of globalization as well as national and humanitarian issues.

As our research center, the Institute of International Studies (IIS) enables lecturers, students, academic staff, and researchers to deepen and apply their expertise through research, policy advocacy, publication, and community services. Strong partnerships with national and international stakeholders underpin and strengthen our contribution to the advancement of the nation and the global community.

All of our teaching, research, and community service is carried out in the spirit of IR ROAR — Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Open-mindedness, Awareness, and Recognition — shared values that sustain a healthy, respectful academic environment, free from any form of violence, and maintain our reputation to achieve proud recognition. These are the values that bind us together as a dynamic community: lecturers, students, academic staff, and researchers working in unison toward a shared purpose.

To everyone visiting this page, and to all who share an interest in the study of International Relations, I invite you to join us in pursuing our shared aspiration: “Towards a just, peaceful, and civilized global society.”

Thank you.
