Course Description
This course aims to provide an understanding of international law from a political perspective, using the conceptual framework of justice and the principles of international law. Can justice truly be realized at the international level? To what extent does the concept of justice influence the behavior of key international political actors in complying with international legal norms? Or in other words: how does international law influence international political practices? In addition, this course also analyzes how one or several countries use international law as an instrument of political interests. This objective is based on the expectation that solutions to various international problems must always be fair so that they are acceptable to all parties. These various international problems include: the use of violence/war, the prohibition of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, international trade, border disputes, and others. This course also aims to improve students’ collaboration skills through group work and encourage students’ critical thinking skills to find various solutions to international legal cases. Students are also expected to be able to formulate research related to international law and implement it.
Expected Learning Outcome
- Master the concepts and principles of international law.
- Analyze the background, rationale, interests, and consequences of implementing and complying with international law using political and ethical (justice) perspectives to explain the behavior of various actors in international relations.
- Improve collaboration skills through group work.
- Think critically and be able to find alternative solutions to various cases related to international law.
- Formulate and conduct research related to international legal issues.
