The Undergraduate Program in International Relations is administered by the Department of International Relations as part of the Universitas Gadjah Mada Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, based on Universitas Gadjah Mada Senate Regulation of 10 Juli 1957 in accordance with Government Regulation No.15/1957. The Department of International Relations at UGM is the first institution to formally teach the study of international relations in Indonesia.

In accordance with decrees released by the Ministry of Education in 1994 and 1995 regarding the national curriculum, the name of the Undergraduate Program in International Relations was formalized along with other undergraduate programs in Universitas Gadjah Mada. This policy was then further reinforced by the Decision of the Director General of Higher Education of the Department of Education and Culture No. 221/DIKTI/Kep/96 on 11 Juli 1996 regarding Study Programs in Undergraduate Programs in Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The Department of International Relations of Universitas Gadjah Mada also administers the International Undergraduate Program (IUP) to prepare students with academic competence for international engagement. However, we are not content to merely be a participant of the global society, but also, and more importantly to bring about a better world through change and transformation of the existing political, economic and social conditions. This program is part of our endeavor to create a just, peaceful and civilized global society. Specifically, the program aims to develop an innovative and collaborative educational system in the study of international relations. This is also to promote a problem-solving-oriented direction of research in the academic community. We also aim to advocate the values of justice, peace and civility through action, reflection, and emancipation.

As a continuation of the Undergraduate Program in International Relations, in 2002 we initiated the Graduate Program in International Relations which aims to deeper analyze the issues, concepts, and empirical frameworks in understanding the interconnectedness between various fields in diplomacy and foreign policy. In 2007, the Graduate Program developed two focuses of study: Politik Internasional (PI) and Kerjasama Pembangunan Internasional (KPI). Later, in 2009 we began to offer a new focus of study: Studi Perdamaian Internasional (SPI). This focus of study is the result of a joint effort with the United Nations University for Peace (UN-Peace) program, as one example of the internationalization of our Graduate Program. For the 2012/2013 academic year, the Graduate Program in International Relations opened new concentrations: Diplomasi Perdagangan Global and Diplomasi Humaniter Global. This is one of our efforts to help students in the Graduate Program further develop academic competence in the respective fields and put analytical ability, creative ability and communicative ability at the forefront of our program. As such, the Graduate Program in International Relations has developed three programs:

  1. Master of Arts in International Relations
  2. Master of Arts in Global Trade Diplomacy
  3. Master of Arts in Global Humanitarian Diplomacy
