Course Description

This course is designed to understand and examine the contemporary dynamics of global social movements, particularly in relation to neoliberal globalization and the impacts of the pandemic.

This course covers four main components: (1) examining changing global conditions that influence the emergence of resistance politics and social movements; (2) introducing perspectives and theories on social movements, both classical and contemporary; (3) exploring movement strategies; and (4) using analytical frameworks for case studies.

By introducing various social movement perspectives, the analytical areas in this course address four central issues: (1) the structural conditions for the emergence and dynamics of movements; (2) how issues and actors are defined and constructed; (3) the formation of collective action; and (4) the conditions that influence the form, strategies, and success/failure of movements.


Expected Learning Outcome

  1. Explain the changing structural context for the emergence and dynamics of social movements.
  2. Explain and critically evaluate various perspectives on global social movements.
  3. Develop a research design and agenda on the topic of global social movements.
  4. Develop a critical analysis of contemporary global social movements.
  5. Present critical analysis and studies in verbal and written form.
