Introduction to Democracy Studies

Course Description

There are many ways to conceptualize democracy. One of our favorites is the one formulated above by Dr. Samsu Rizal Panggabean. The reason is simple: Mr. Rizal’s conceptualization is soberly hopeful. He believes in the superiority of democracy, but he knows full well that if we are ready for democracy, we also need to be prepared for disappointment, disappointment, and more disappointment.

By imagining democracy as dough, the Introduction to Democracy Studies (PSDem, or sometimes PSDamn!) class works like a Democracy Kitchen. After identifying the “dough,” we will gather the necessary “ingredients,” choose the right “recipe,” “mix” everything, and “taste” democracy. In the midst of all this, we anticipate various sabotages by dictators and autocrats—we ensure our kitchen can still produce a delicious democratic dish!

  1. Assess various definitions, elements, measurements, and models of democracy
