Course Description
Introduction to International Relations provides a fundamental understanding of key concepts, historical contexts, and theoretical frameworks within the field of International Relations (IR). This class examines the interactions between states, international organizations, non-state actors, and individuals within a complex global system.
The class begins by defining IR and its significance, exploring the historical development of the modern international system from the Treaty of Westphalia to the post-World War II era. It traces the emergence of IR as an academic discipline shaped by major global conflicts and shifting power dynamics.
Students will learn essential tools for examining global issues. The core of the class is the exploration of key concepts, definitions, and theories—such as realism, liberalism, and constructivism—through a guided reading club.
To broaden perspectives, the class includes guest lectures on emancipatory and critical theories, encouraging students to challenge traditional Western-centric views and consider the importance of decolonizing IR.
The final project, “Visualizing Everyday International Relations: Views from the Global South,” encourages students to connect theory with practice by examining how IR impacts everyday life in countries of the Global South.
By the end of the class, students will have a solid understanding of fundamental IR concepts, its historical and theoretical foundations, and the importance of diversifying and decolonizing the field. This will prepare them to critically engage with global issues both academically and in their daily lives.
