Course Description
There are at least two reasons why studying Australian foreign policy is important. First, Australia’s position and role in international politics are not only crucial but also unique, particularly in relation to its relations with Western countries, on the one hand, and with countries in the Asian region, on the other. Second, Australia’s distinct political, economic, social, and cultural systems, coupled with its geographical location directly bordering Indonesia, make it a uniquely important country for Indonesia’s political, economic, defense, and security interests. The stark contrast between the two countries often leads to divergent national interests, which often give rise to controversy and conflict.
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to gain a more comprehensive and critical understanding of the history, foundations, development processes, prominent issues, dynamics (change and continuity), opportunities, and challenges of contemporary Australian foreign policy.
