The Department of International Relations held a Short Course on Korean Politics in April 2019. As in previous years, Professor Yang Seung Yoon is the guest lecturer of the Short Course on Korean Politics. This class was not only intended for IR UGM students but also opened for public participants. Professor Yang is the Emeritus Professor from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea, who is an expert in Indonesian politics.
Professor Yang discussed political developments in the Korean Peninsula and their correlation with Indonesia. Classes were held in 3 sessions, starting on April 22, 2019, to April 24, 2019. The topics discussed in this short course included Political Situation on the Korean Peninsula; Relationship between North Korea and the United States; and Indonesia’s role in the future of the Korean Peninsula.
On this occasion, Professor Yang argued that with Indonesia’s current position, which has diplomatic relations with both South Korea and North Korea, will enable Indonesia to have a fairly strategic role in the future of the Korean Peninsula.
Professor Yang is scheduled to teach Korean Politics again in October 2019. The Short Course on Korean Politics is expected to provide an opportunity for fellow students to deepen their understanding of Korean political developments, as well as their correlation with Indonesia.
