Curriculum Structure and Degree Requirement

Structure

K21 adopts a semi-block system, where students are required to complete 144 credits in no more than 5 years or 10 semesters.

Throughout their first year, students take a set of Faculty-Mandated Courses and Department-Mandated Courses. These include a number of courses that introduce students to the 3 subfields and to area studies.

Throughout their second and third years, students concentrate on 1 of the 3 available subfields: Global Politics and Security (GPS), Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS), or International Political Economy and Development (IPED). At the same time, students take Area Studies Courses. In their third year, students taking the international program participate in a student exchange, study abroad, or double degree program at one of UPIR UGM’s partner universities. Also in their third year, students take Independent Study, where they prepare and defend their thesis proposal.

Throughout their fourth (and/or fifth) year, students complete their Community Service and Undergraduate Thesis.

Degree Requirements

1. 144 credits. In accordance with the national curriculum, each students need to complete at least 144 credits, which include

 12 credits of University-mandated courses

120 credits of Departmental course

• Department-Mandated Courses (60 credits)
• Departmental Elective Courses (45 credits)
• Cross-Departmental Elective Courses (9 credits)
• Undergraduate Thesis (6 credits)

2. Self-Tailored. Students design their own study plan and decide accordingly how to make the most of the 120 credits of Departmental Courses, which comprises of

60 credits of Department-Mandated Courses

• Core IR Courses (21 credits)
• Concentration Introductory Courses (27 credits)
• Area Studies Introductory Course (3 credits)
• Research Courses (9 credits)

45 credits of Departmental Elective Courses

• Concentration Courses (students need to take at least 9 credits from the subfield they chose to concentrate on), some of which can be taken at partner universities through MBKM
• Area Studies Courses (students need to take at least 15 credits), some of which can be taken at partner universities through MBKM

9 credits of Cross-Departmental Courses

This component can be completed by taking
• courses offered by other departments or faculties, some of which can be taken at partner universities through MBKM
• MBKM activities
• Departmental Elective Courses: Concentration Courses and/or Area Studies Courses

6 credits of Undergraduate Thesis

3. Mandatory components. Students are required to take
• all University-Mandated Courses
• all Faculty-Mandated Courses
• all Department-Mandated Courses (including Core IR Courses, Concentration Introductory Courses, Area Studies Introductory Courses, and Research Courses)
• Undergraduate Thesis

4. Elective components. Depending on their study plan, students choose
• a number of Concentration Courses
• a number of Area Studies Courses
• a number of Cross-Departmental Courses

5. Subfield/concentration components. Students need to complete at least 18 credits from 1 of the 3 available subfields — GPS, PCS, or IPED. Students need to formally state which subfield they wish to concentrate on by the beginning of their 6th Semester, as they enroll in Independent Study. The 18 credits include
• 9 credits of the mandatory Concentration (subfield) Introductory Courses, to be completed in Semesters 2 and 3
• 9 credits of the elective Concentration Courses, to be taken in Semesters 3, 4, 5, and/or 6, some of which can be taken at partner universities through MBKM

6. Area Studies components. Students need to complete at least 15 credits of Area Studies Courses. They are to be taken in Semesters 3, 4, 5, and/or 6, some of which can be taken at partner universities through MBKM.

7. Cross-Departmental components. Students are allowed to take a maximum of 9 credits from outside of UPIR UGM. Should they not be interested in taking courses offered by other departments or faculties, nor in taking MBKM activities, they can use the 9 credits to take additional Concentration Courses and/or Area Studies Courses.

8. International Exposure Program (IEP). Students who are enrolled in the international program need to take credits from one of UPIR UGM’s partner universities. This is to be done in Semester 5 and/or 6, through existing student exchange, study abroad, or double degree programs. The credits taken at partner universities can substitute for Concentration Courses, Area Studies Courses, and/or Cross-Departmental Courses, and may be a part of MBKM. Technical arrangements regarding IEP are provided in a separate document.

9. Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM). Students are allowed to take a maximum of 24 credits from the 8 MBKM arenas. The credits taken through MBKM can substitute for Concentration Courses, Area Studies Courses, Research Courses, and/or Cross-Departmental Courses. Technical arrangements regarding MBKM are provided in a separate document.

10. Undergraduate Thesis. Students need to complete 6 credits of Undergraduate Thesis as their exit exam from UPIR UGM. Technical arrangements regarding Undergraduate Thesis are provided in a separate document.

11. Fast Track. Students have the opportunity to embark upon the fast track program, which allows them to take undergraduate courses at UPIR UGM throughout Semesters 1-6 and graduate courses at IR UGM’s Master Program throughout Semesters 7-8. Upon completing an undergraduate thesis and graduate thesis in Semesters 9-10, students shall receive both BA and MA degrees. Technical arrangements regarding the fast track program are provided in a separate document.

12. Academic Administration. UPIR UGM follows FISIPOL UGM’s academic regulations, as stated in FISIPOL’s program specification. They include, among others, but are not limited to, arrangements on admission tests, tuition fees, registration, leave of absence, ABT (all but thesis) status, and graduation.

Undergraduate Thesis

Topic Submission

  • Students can propose a thesis topic once they have completed at least 94 credits.
  • The proposed topic needs to be in line with the student’s concentration.
  • The topic needs to be proposed to the instructor of the Independent Study course, a mandatory course taken during the fifth or sixth semesters.
  • Students who wish to change their topic need permission from their Independent Study course instructor. If the proposed change occurs after Independent Study course is completed, students should consult with the Secretary of the International Relations Undergraduate Program and fill out the proper form (Formulir Perubahan Judul Skripsi).

Thesis Supervision

  • Initial supervision of the undergraduate thesis is provided by the instructor of the Independent Study course.
  • Upon completing the thesis seminar, students will be assigned a specific thesis supervisor.
  • The thesis supervisor is assigned by the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program based on (1) the recommendations given by the panel of examiners in the thesis seminar, (2) the correlation of the student’s topic with the lecturer’s expertise, and (3) the lecturer’s supervision load.
  • Thesis supervision follows FISIPOL’s academic administrative requirements, as stated in Panduan Akademik Program Pendidikan Sarjana FISIPOL UGM.
  • Under certain circumstances, such as the case of a thesis supervisor taking a leave of absence, students may request a replacement supervisor. Students who wish to ask for this replacement supervisor should consult with the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program and fill out the proper form (Formulir Penggantian Dosen Pembimbing).

Thesis Proposal Seminar

  • As a replacement for the final exam of the Independent Study course, students present their thesis proposals in a thesis proposal seminar.
  • Each proposal is presented before a panel of three individuals, consisting of one Independent Study instructor and two examiners. The examiners are assigned by the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program, based on their familiarity with the topic.
  • The panel should (1) attentively follow the student’s presentation, (2) offer comments, critiques, questions, and/or suggestions, (3) determine whether the student can proceed with the proposed undergraduate research, (4) recommend one of three panel members to become the student’s thesis supervisor, and (5) grade the student’s presentation of their proposal.

Format of the Thesis Proposal

The thesis proposal consists of approximately 1.500 to 2.000 words, including footnotes. It should be around six to eight pages in length, with 1.5 spacing and 12 point standard font size. The proposal must include the following components:

  • The relevancy of the proposed research (around 250 words)
  • A research question (composed of one or two paragraph(s))
  • The conceptual framework, or how the research question will be answered (around 500 words)
  • The main argument or hypothesis of the research
  • The research methods, or how the research will be conducted, what kind of data needs to be collected, and how the data will be further analyzed
  • How the thesis will be organized, the two options being as either a report or a journal article

Thesis Defense

  • Once a student’s thesis is approved by her/his supervisor, the student may ask UPIR UGM to organize a thesis defense. There needs to be a space of at least one month between the thesis seminar and the thesis defense.
  • The thesis defense is presented before a panel consisting of the supervisor and two examiners assigned by the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program.
  • Students who wish to hold their thesis defense should register with UPIR UGM’s secretary. If they wish to defend their thesis in a certain month, they need to register before the end of the previous month. The schedule of the defense is announced within the first week of each month, while the defense itself is held in the second or third weeks of the same month.
  • When registering for the thesis defense, students need to present certain documents, most importantly Surat Keterangan Lulus Teori (which states that the respective student has completed 138 credits).
  • In accordance with FISIPOL’s regulation, should a student not able to complete their thesis in one semester, the thesis may receive a lowered grade.

Thesis Writing Format

A thesis manuscript must consist of approximately 10.000 words, including footnotes. It should be around 40 pages, with 1.5 point line spacing and 12 points standard font size. The manuscript should consist of several components:

  • Introduction, which includes the main points of the thesis – 2.000 to 2.500 words or a maximum of  ¼ of the total manuscript.
  • Analyses, should be divided proportionally into several chapters (or sections), according to the proposed research design – around 6.500 words.
  • Conclusion, which includes a brief summary of the research results and a reflection of the research process – around 1.000 words.

Thesis Supervision Procedures

The procedures and provisions of the thesis supervision process are as follows:

  • The thesis-supervisor will be assigned by the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program, taking into consideration: (1) the suitability of the thesis’ topic with the lecturer’s expertise; and (2) the distribution of thesis supervision assignments between lecturers.
  • The thesis supervision process takes into account the following issues:
    • The student and the supervisor should meet according to the previously agreed upon schedule. Any anticipated changes in the schedule should be communicated prior to the meeting.
    • Every supervision session should be reported using the One Stop Service FISIPOL UGM and/or the supervision form.
    • Students should submit their thesis manuscript at least three days before the scheduled supervision meeting, so that their supervisor can have adequate time to inspect the progress of the manuscript.
    • Before each supervising session, students are advised to prepare some questions and concerns in order to have a more productive supervision session.
    • The supervision session should be held on campus during working hours. In case that the session cannot be held during working hours, the session may be held using other medias, such as e-mail or video call. In the unlikely case that the session cannot be held in any of the previously mentioned ways, other solutions can be found as long as it is under the acknowledgment of the Department.
  • From the time when the supervisor is officially assigned, the student has twelve months (or two semesters) to complete the undergraduate thesis process. In the case that this process exceeds twelve months (or two semesters) the student is obliged to complete a letter (Surat Perpanjangan Pembimbing) to the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program. In the case that supervisor does not consent to the extension of the supervision process, the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program will assign a new supervisor to the student.
  • The process to change the supervisor can be started based on the following criteria:
    • In the case where the current supervisor is retiring or taking a leave of absence, the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program will ask another lecturer to take over the supervision process.
    • In the case where there is a (perceived) incompatibility between the topic of the thesis and the expertise of the supervisor, the student should submit a request of the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program in order to clarify and find a possible solution.
    • In the case of a personal issue between the thesis supervisor and the student, either party may submit a request to change the supervisor to the Secretary of the Undergraduate Program. After this request is received, the Secretary will discuss the proposed change with the Head of the Department. After this, a new supervisor can be sought.
