Curriculum

Starting in August 2016, UPIR UGM transitioned from Kurikulum 2000 (for the regular program) and Kurikulum 2011 (for the international program) to Kurikulum 2015. This transition was completed in August 2018, meaning that all UPIR UGM students, enrolled in either the regular or international program, currently use a single curriculum.

The transition from Kurikulum 2000/2011 to Kurikulum 2015 marked a change of priority from making sure that graduates have a wide understanding of the various IR subfields to having a deeper understanding on one IR subfield — Global Politics and Security, Peace and Conflict Studies, or International Political Economy and Development.

International Program

The international program is different to the regular one in three ways. First, it requires students to take credits at one of UPIR UGM’s partner universities abroad. More details on this International Exposure Program is provided in a separate booklet. Second, it uses English as its language of instruction. Third, it has a separate admission process and tuition category.

Educational Philosophy

Kurikulum 2015 upholds the educational philosophy that underpinned Kurikulum 2000. Being student-centered, it is based on three principles:

1. Self-tailored

Each student is given the opportunity to design her/his own study plan. The curriculum is structured in a way that students can choose one out of three concentrations and any area studies they wish to be experts in.

2. Facilitation

The curriculum and its curricular contents support the students’ study plan. To compliment this, students are highly recommended to supplement their studies by participating in extracurricular activities and other non-curricular activities.

3. Regulated

UPIR UGM has in place a set of regulations and procedures to ensure that the students’ freedom to tailor their own study has the necessary structure needed to maximize acquisition of certain knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
