INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
IIS UGM seeks to carry out two main activities: academic research and empowerment. These two activities are realized through the formation of a main division engaged in research and advocacy. In addition to managing the research process, IIS UGM is committed to processing the research into a practical program through advocacy agendas. The Research and Advocacy Division has four pillars of concentration: International Political Economy, International Security and Peace, International Politics, and Area Studies.
The Research Division carries four main functions. First, developing proposals for research/ advocacy grant applications submitted to both on-campus and off-campus funding sources. Second, providing guidance and supervision to research projects conducted by Institute of International Studies (IIS) staffs. Third, the Division of Research conducts IIS independent research projects, including administering the projects during the writing period. Fourth, the division also focuses on managing and monitoring research grant activities conducted by the Department of International Relations Universitas Gadjah Mada.
The Advocacy Division performs four main functions. First, maintaining and monitoring advocacy activities both policy-based and community empowerment-based conducted by the Institute of International Studies (IIS). Second, the division initiates training, workshop, and advocacy activities established from the institution’s research output. Third, liaising with external parties to build networks among academics, governments, and civil society. Fourth, the division also focuses on managing and monitoring community empowerment programs conducted by the Department of International Relations Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Research and Advocacy Pillars
INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY
Research under the theme of International Political Economy studies the various ways political actors, institutions, and processes shape the system in which economic interactions take place, and conversely how economic actors, institutions, and processes influence the political structure and outcome. In studying this relationship, research is oriented toward exploring issues, concepts, and theories in the realms of international development and cooperation, global political economy, politics of trade and finance, business diplomacy and global value chain.
INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY
The theme International Peace and Security has a broad field of study and approach. In addition to studying the issues that are caused by traditional security threats, such as war, research under this theme is also extensively investigating non-traditional security threats that are related with human security. Researches that are developed under this theme are designed to enrich and enhance knowledge and understanding about various issues, such as the causes of war and peace, terrorism, humanitarianism, violence and nonviolence, peacebuilding, and peace operation.
International Politics houses researches that examine how international actors, be it states or non-states, compete or cooperate on various issues to achieve political goals. This theme encourages researchers to review various issues, concepts, policies, and theories related with power and power relations in the international realm. A number of sub-themes that are developed under the umbrella of International Politics are diplomacy, foreign policy, international organization, and international law.
Area Studies accommodate researchers in IIS whose interest is to develop intrinsic and comprehensive studies on a particular region that is geographically bound, examining cross-cutting issues. Researches in Area Studies do not only attempt to explore characters and issues unique to a certain region, but also intend to grasp the evolution of the concept of region in the ever-globalizing world. At the moment, IIS strength in Area Studies is on European study developed in the Program on European Studies (EUROS), in collaboration with the Delegation of European Union in Indonesia and Indonesian Community for European Studies.
