Gendering Islamic Subjects in Indonesian Public High School
with Sawyer Martin French (Research Fellow at IIS UGM)
Religion subject, including Islam, is taught in Indonesian formal education as mandatory since the first grade of elementary school. Dominant Islamic gender ideologies are formed among Indonesian Muslims through this teaching process. The subject often intervenes directly in telling how to be a muslimah (female Muslim). The event will discuss the curriculum and determine the extent to which it both reflects popular gender ideologies in Indonesian society at large and contributes to those developed by students.
